Chweneyagae’s family has announced the confirmed cause of his death.

The family of the late actor Presley Chweneyagae has confirmed that he died of natural causes, with no suspicion of foul play.

Speaking to ZA TRENDING on Wednesday, family spokesperson Mzwakhe Sigudla addressed ongoing speculation, firmly denying any suggestion of suspicious circumstances surrounding Chweneyagae’s death.

Sigudla explained that the actor suddenly experienced severe breathing difficulties at home, prompting an emergency call to paramedics.

The nation was left in shock on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, following the sudden death of acclaimed actor Presley Chweneyagae. He was 40 years old.

His passing was confirmed by his agency, MLA, in a heartfelt statement:
"It is with profound sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of one of South Africa’s most gifted and beloved actors, Presley Chweneyagae, at the age of 40."

Born in Mafikeng, the award-winning actor rose to international fame with his breakout role in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi. He later became a household name for his portrayal of Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena in the popular television drama The River, which ran for six seasons before ending in 2023.

More recently, Chweneyagae delighted fans with his return to screens in Cobrizi, a spin-off series where he reprised his iconic role as “Cobra.”

Since news of his passing broke, tributes have poured in across social media, with fans and industry colleagues expressing deep sorrow and remembering his immense talent and impact on South African television and film.
