According to Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the minister of electricity, Eskom lost 17,300MW due to outages during the week of October 27 to November 3, undermining the gains the power company had made in the preceding weeks.
Speaking to the media about the Energy Action Plan's implementation, he stated that the 17,000MW loss of power outages exceeded the 14,500MW benchmark set by Eskom for the summer. According to him, boiler tube leaks in 11 generating units were the primary cause of the loss.
"In October, we managed to establish a certain level of credibility by guaranteeing that we could maintain our available capacity for approximately 11 days. In terms of psychology, that is significant during that time. We succeeded in ensuring that load shedding is not occurring throughout the nation.
According to him, there have been days when Eskom's available capacity has topped 30,000MW.
The fact that there are occasional fluctuations in the capacity that are caused by unforeseen capacity losses has been concerning. The unplanned capacity loss factor, partial load losses, and outages were recorded at 14,113MW during the period of October 2 to October 6.
"The following week, from October 9 to October 13, we observed
"By ensuring that we could sustain our available capacity for roughly 11 days in October, we were able to establish some credibility. That is significant at that time from a psychological standpoint. We were successful in making sure that load shedding doesn't happen all over the country.
He claims that there have been instances where Eskom's capacity has exceeded 30,000MW.
Unexpected capacity losses have resulted in sporadic fluctuations in capacity, which has been concerning. Between October 2 and October 6, 14,113MW recorded unplanned capacity loss factor, partial load losses, and outages.
"The week that followed, from October 9 to October 13, we noted
On September 3, Eskom declared that unit 3 had been put back into service two months earlier than expected.
According to Ramokgopa, Kusile unit 5 should be operational by the third week of December.
