Mantashe Affirms Unstrained Relations Between South Africa and Lesotho
Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, clarified that the relations between South Africa and Lesotho remain unaffected amidst recent discussions regarding illegal miners. Mantashe addressed the issue during a press briefing at Harmony Gold Mine in Welkom on Monday afternoon, following a methane explosion that tragically claimed the lives of at least 31 illegal miners in an unused shaft last month.
Mantashe emphasized that his engagement with Lesotho's Minister of Mineral Resources and Mining was focused on addressing the situation. However, he highlighted the importance of not involving criminals in rescue efforts, as suggested by his counterpart. He reassured the public that the government cannot allow such actions.
The minister expressed hope that survivors might still be found, as some of the victims were believed to be located approximately 950 meters below the surface. He acknowledged the challenging conditions caused by high methane levels, which continue to hinder rescue operations.
Mantashe's comments affirm the commitment to cooperation and maintaining a positive relationship between South Africa and Lesotho, even in the face of unfortunate incidents like the recent mining tragedy.
